A Major African Bank Just Opened a Crypto Vault, and Ripple Built the Locks

Absa Corporate and Investment Banking switched on Absa Digital Asset Custody on September 21, calling it a digital first for Africa, built to institutional standards. The technology inside the vault is Ripple Custody. Reece Merrick, Ripple's managing director for the Middle East and Africa, called the launch a major milestone for bank grade digital asset infrastructure on the continent.

The roots run back to October 2025, when the two firms first announced the partnership, Ripple's first major custody deal in Africa. Eleven months of fine tuning later, it is a named product, private key management, transaction and approval controls, bank grade governance and compliance wrapping, a secure hardware environment, audit trails, and deterministic key derivation instead of permanently storing private keys. Absa manages more than 2.07 trillion rand, about $119.5 billion in assets, and its corporate clients now get the same security standard for digital holdings that they trust for everything traditional the bank already keeps.

The service covers Bitcoin, XRP and tokenized real world assets, with settlement for corporate clients and asset managers. Absa is still keeping its full supported asset list, its fee schedule and its first clients under wraps; institutional buyers are pointed to a sales desk for now. That restraint is the story. Absa is opening a vault, the place banks always start. Custody before trading is how banks have always entered a new asset class, and this is that familiar playbook running on new rails.

The backdrop gives it scale. Sub Saharan Africa's on chain volume topped $205 billion through June 2025, and South Africa's Financial Sector Conduct Authority had approved 310 of 533 crypto provider license applications as of March 31, 2026. Ripple has been stacking regional pieces for a while, Chipper Cash for crypto based cross border payments, and its RLUSD stablecoin expanding through partnerships with Chipper Cash, VALR and Yellow Card.

Ripple's custody platform has been built for exactly this kind of enterprise deployment, institutional grade key management, layered approval workflows and compliance tooling that fit inside a bank's existing control environment. The partnership has been maturing for nearly a year, and the launch gives African institutions a custody option that arrives with bank level governance already baked in.

The signal for adoption watchers is geographic, the plumbing has outgrown its New York and London origins. When a $119 billion African bank builds the vault first, the clients follow.
