Three Stablecoin Companies Just Won Federal Bank Charters, and One Builds for AI Agents
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency handed conditional national trust bank approvals to three crypto native firms on Friday, and the message to Wall Street is unmistakable. stablecoin issuers are walking through the front door of American banking. Agora National Trust Bank and Catena Trust Bank won fresh charters, while Bastion Platforms Trust Company won approval to convert into a national bank.
Bastion makes the enterprise pitch explicit. The company issues white label stablecoins for other businesses and handles reserve custody and customer wallets behind the scenes. CEO Nassim Eddequiouaq told the Wall Street Journal that banks want a federally regulated partner, adding that the expectation ahead is 24/7 settlement for a fraction of a cent. Founded in 2023 by two former a16z crypto executives and backed by Coinbase Ventures, Sony Innovation Fund, and Samsung Next, Bastion raised $14.6 million last year and already serves as Sony Bank's stablecoin partner, with plans to bring stablecoin payments into Sony's gaming and entertainment ecosystem.
Agora applied for its charter back in April and pairs its AUSD stablecoin with a full financial operating system for global businesses. settlement infrastructure, treasury management, fiat connectivity, and tools for working with digital dollars. CEO Nick van Eck called the charter the regulatory layer that makes the whole stack possible at scale.
Catena may be the most forward looking of the three. The company says it builds financial infrastructure specifically for AI agents, including accounts, payments, treasury functions, and controls over what agents can do with money. Its site puts it plainly. deterministic policy enforcement, immutable audit trails, and verifiable agent identity, built from the ground up, on rails designed for software agents. The bank account for the agent economy just got a federal charter.
For everyday users, the change lands quietly but matters. A stablecoin issued by a federally chartered trust bank carries a different level of assurance than one issued by an offshore entity, and banks that once treated crypto firms as untouchable now have a regulated counterparty to work with. Expect more banks to offer stablecoin services to their own customers in the year ahead.
Context sharpens the signal. The OCC said it received 40 de novo bank applications in the prior 18 months, against 48 across the entire stretch from 2011 through 2024. Demand for federal charters has rarely run this hot. The practical read is simple. the dollars moving on crypto rails are gaining the same regulatory standing as the dollars in your checking account, and the companies building that bridge just got their keys to the banking system.
