Kojima's Worst Zoom Call Became His Biggest Pitch
Hideo Kojima just told the story of the call that nearly ended his studio, and it reads like one of his own plot twists. In his first interview with IGN since the news broke, Kojima described a June Zoom call with Sony Interactive Entertainment where he learned PlayStation was ending funding for Physint, his action espionage epic. He had been traveling, fresh from a Prada event in New York and a stop in Los Angeles, and walked into the call expecting routine business. Instead he heard the funding was gone. He asked them to repeat it, he told IGN, his mind gone blank.
The stakes were existential. Kojima Productions employs around 200 people, had hired specifically for Physint, and carried bank loans, with actors already scanned for the project. Losing one of the studio's two major projects could have forced deep cuts, and Kojima feared the whole company could collapse. He told team leaders three days later, temporarily moved several developers to OD, the studio's Xbox funded horror game, and started hunting for a new publisher. The whole team stayed.
Then came the pivot. Kojima kept the catastrophe secret from all but two trusted lieutenants and went back to his desk, where he did the unthinkable and started adding to the Physint concept. Out came an audacious new pitch, built for a sprawling IP spanning films, anime, and television alongside the game. Xbox, already his partner on OD, reportedly called it a pitch unlike any they had seen.
Sony has stayed silent on its reasons and kept its distance since the call. Bloomberg reported the split was partly about multiformat plans. Kojima stays warm toward Sony, telling IGN he loves the company, a lifelong Walkman devotee whose cameras are all Sony, adding that after 30 years together he would have appreciated an earlier heads up. He is unsure whether Physint will ever reach PlayStation hardware, calling that a question for Xbox. A week ago, Kojima announced Bill Skarsgard as the game's lead.
The team held together. Kojima found his people happily creating the pitch, he told IGN, and beamed about having really tough people at the studio. Kojima Productions calls itself healthy and profitable, and the man himself is thinking about mortality, saying maybe he only has 10 years left.
The context makes the recovery more remarkable. Death Stranding 2 launched on PS5 in 2025 and arrived on PC earlier this year, while OD, the studio's experimental horror game, is published by Xbox Game Studios. Kojima Productions issued a statement saying it retains a strong relationship with Sony, and Kojima himself keeps repeating the point. A week before the interview, he announced Bill Skarsgard as Physint's lead, a signal that the rebuilt project is already moving. Three decades with PlayStation ended one partnership, and opened a bigger one.
For creators everywhere, this is the masterclass. A rejection from a publisher became the seed of a bigger universe, and a studio that could have scattered grew tighter instead. Kojima turned the worst call of his career into the biggest pitch of his life.
