Google Just Gave Away the Operating System of Factory Robots

Google's industrial robotics unit Intrinsic used ROSCon 2026 in Toronto to do something the robotics world has waited years to see. It open sourced Intrinsic Core, the foundational software layer behind its physical AI platform, and put it on GitHub under the permissive Apache 2.0 license for anyone to use, modify, and ship in commercial products.

The release covers the essential plumbing every industrial robot needs. Intrinsic Control is a hardware agnostic real time framework that adapts a robot's trajectory mid movement from sensor feedback. Pose estimation, built on Nvidia's FoundationPose, lets robots detect and handle parts dynamically instead of relying on rigid and expensive physical fixtures. Motion planning generates collision free paths automatically, grasp planning adapts varied grippers to objects on the fly, and the package adds simulation, vision calibration, and ROS drivers for sensors and third party hardware.

These are the same capabilities Intrinsic runs in its own manufacturing deployments every day, packaged as reusable building blocks. The pitch to developers is simple. Stop rebuilding the same infrastructure for every new robot and start from working components.

Alongside Core, Intrinsic shipped the Open Machine Tending Solution, a reference design for AI powered CNC machine tending with modular support for hardware from Universal Robots and FANUC. The target audience is telling. Across the United States and Europe, tens of thousands of machine shops fabricate precision parts, yet only 8 percent use any automation at all, held back by cost and technical complexity.

Here is the angle everyone will miss. This is the Android playbook applied to physical AI. Give away the platform layer, grow the developer ecosystem, and let the ecosystem's growth carry your services with it. Observers have noted that Google leadership has framed Intrinsic as the Android of robotics, and this release turns that framing into a product.

Intrinsic's own journey adds context. Founded in 2021 as an Alphabet company, it was folded directly into Google's operations this February to accelerate physical AI, the company's term for systems that perceive, reason, and act in the real world. Open sourcing the core stack is how a platform owner recruits an army. Every integrator that builds on Intrinsic Core becomes a distribution channel for the rest of Google's robotics and cloud tooling, including its existing Flowstate product line.

For builders, the takeaway is immediate. The hardest parts of industrial robotics just became a download. For the rest of us, watch the machine shops. When automation reaches the 92 percent of fabricators still doing it by hand, the productivity wave starts in places technology coverage rarely visits, and it starts now.
