Tesla Hid Its Next Humanoid Inside a Phone App Update
Tesla's next humanoid robot may have debuted in the least dramatic venue imaginable, the asset folder of its Android app. Design files labeled Gen 3 turned up inside the Tesla app's signed package, offering the clearest look yet at the coming Optimus generation.
Three image files carry the Gen 3 name, robot_closeup_gen3.png, robot_home_full_body_gen3.png, and robot_home_inactive_gen3.png. They first appeared in app version 4.60.0, released August 27, 2026. In the September 5 release the full body and inactive images were swapped for higher resolution versions at 1206 by 1065 pixels, and the assets were still present in the September 22 build with the files byte identical across releases, which makes them look like deliberate product artwork rather than a temporary test.
The design shift is the real story. Where the Gen 2.5 prototype showed exposed mechanical linkages and gold plating on the knees and shins, the Gen 3 images show sealed joints, flexible covers where the torso meets the thighs, matte black fairings on the lower legs, and a contoured champagne gold body with tighter fitting panels. The hands, which Tesla says carry 22 degrees of freedom, look more refined, with thicker forearms and slimmer wrists consistent with actuators moved up the arm in a tendon driven arrangement.
The app code adds more clues. Recent releases include fields such as optimus_charger_id and an energy model entry called SITE_TYPE_OPTIMUS, signaling that Tesla is preparing software support for the robot and its charging equipment inside the same app customers use for their cars.
This fits the production picture Tesla has painted all year. The company described Optimus Gen 3 in January as its first version intended for mass production, set a production target before the end of 2026, and told investors it had removed the Model S and Model X lines at Fremont, California to install its first Optimus production lines. The first robots are slated for the Optimus Academy, a facility for collecting training data before wider rollout.
The app package quietly tells a versioning story too. Alongside the Gen 3 set, it carries standard and gold artwork groups, each with close up, full body, and inactive images, suggesting Tesla is building one shared interface that can represent multiple robot generations and connection states. The inactive image, rendered darker, looks designed for an offline or unlinked status. Tesla is designing more than a robot here. It is designing the phone screen you will manage it from.
