Grayscale Filed to Move Litecoin's Trust From OTC to NYSE Arca, and Real Creation and Redemption Is the Upgrade
Litecoin's eight year wait for real ETF plumbing is nearly over. On September 11, Grayscale Investments filed an amended registration statement with the SEC to convert its Grayscale Litecoin Trust into the Grayscale Litecoin Trust ETF, with plans to list the shares on NYSE Arca. The trust has been trading over the counter under the ticker LTCN since January 2018, and the filing keeps that familiar ticker while upgrading everything underneath it.
The upgrade that matters is mechanical. As an ETF, the trust gains the creation and redemption machinery that lets authorized participants create or redeem shares against the underlying Litecoin, which keeps the market price tethered to the actual value of the coins it holds. The over the counter structure ran on simpler plumbing. As of June 30, the trust held about 24.25 million shares outstanding with a net asset value of $82.28 million, roughly $3.39 per share, and the conversion process has been grinding through the regulatory machinery since early 2025. NYSE Arca filed its own listing application back in January 2025, and the registration still awaits the SEC's effective date.
The market is already voting with its wallet. Litecoin traded around $68 to $70 on the news, up more than 7 percent on the day, with trading volume surging 137 percent above the 30 day average. More than $1 billion in Litecoin moved onchain within 24 hours, and futures open interest climbed past $500 million. Canary Capital's LTCC ETF has already debuted on Nasdaq, widening the regulated on ramps for Litecoin exposure on a second exchange.
The bigger picture is the steady march of crypto assets into traditional market structure. Each trust to ETF conversion removes a layer of friction between Wall Street plumbing and onchain value, and Litecoin, one of the oldest live networks in the space, is a fitting candidate for the treatment. Sound money advocates have long argued that open networks deserve the same market access as any other asset, and the paperwork is finally catching up to the principle.
For readers watching Litecoin, the catalyst to circle is the effective date of the registration and the completion of the exchange listing approval. Until then, the setup is straightforward, a well known wrapper, a clear mechanical upgrade, and a market already leaning in. The premium gap that defined eight years of over the counter trading is about to meet its fix, and that is a win for everyone who wants crypto assets trading at their true value.
