Meta Just Gave Everyone a Game Studio, and the Games Ship Inside Your Feed
The most talked about announcement at Meta Connect this week was a pair of creative tools rather than a headset. On the second day of the conference, September 24, Meta unveiled Horizon Create and Horizon Studio, two AI tools with a disarmingly simple pitch. Describe the game you want, and the game builds itself.
Horizon Create is a standalone phone app. You type a description or pick a template, and the Horizon Engine's agentic creation system generates a complete two dimensional or three dimensional game, handling mechanics, difficulty balancing, art direction, progression systems, and even multiplayer. Builds run in the background while you play other titles, a notification arrives when yours is ready to test, and multiple projects can cook at once. Horizon Studio is the browser based counterpart, running entirely in the browser with your laptop as the only hardware you need, offering visual editing for scenes, assets, scripts, and layouts, with projects moving between the two tools carrying assets and iteration history along.
Saxs Persson, Meta's VP of Horizon, framed the ambition around stripping away the months of tools, hardware, and marketing that stand between a great game idea and its first players. The distribution plan is the real power move. Games publish natively into Facebook, Instagram, and Horizon feeds, where a viewer can tap a clip and land in a multiplayer session within seconds, straight from the feed. Discovery runs on an algorithm that rewards games that are engaging, stable, and culturally relevant, and top performers unlock in game monetization plus the Meta Horizon Creator Fund.
Wall Street read the room instantly. Meta shares jumped about 4 percent toward a one year high, while Take Two fell 1.6 percent to $202.98, Unity dropped 6.1 percent to $41.42, and Roblox slipped 0.3 percent to $48.83, according to Barron's. Freedom Capital Markets analyst Nick McKay named the concern. AI could simplify creation enough to erode the competitive moats incumbents enjoy. It is the second such wobble this year, after Alphabet's Project Genie sent the same stocks tumbling on January 30. Every published game still passes Meta's content safety systems, earns an automated age rating, and inherits Family Center youth protections, and the waitlist is open now with early access rolling out gradually.
For players, the arcade just moved into the feed you already scroll. The next game you love might come from a teenager with a phone and a wild idea, built in an afternoon and shared like a video. Creation used to be the moat. Now the moat is taste, and everybody gets to dig.
