Minecraft Is Getting Its First New Dimension in 14 Years, and It Debuts Inside the Sequel

At Minecraft Live on September 26, Mojang announced the biggest addition to Minecraft's universe in a generation. The Sift, a fourth dimension joining the Overworld, the Nether, and the End, and the first new dimension in more than 14 years. Mojang describes it as beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls. Early looks show pinkish blocks, blue green vegetation, and regions called the Meadow and the Carapace, plus a new mob that calls the dimension home.

Here is the twist that makes the announcement more than a content drop. The Sift will debut inside Minecraft Dungeons II, the sequel launching September 29, and only later arrive in Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027. The spin off becomes the flagship for the franchise's most ambitious worldbuilding in 14 years. Dungeons II itself is a reinvention. After the Arch Illager's defeat, the game's world sits out of balance, angry illagers everywhere, an Illager High Council calling the shots. The sequel replaces separate level based missions with one interconnected world, finally adds jumping, and scatters rifts that transport players to The Sift. Deeper character customization, approachable combat, and cooperative multiplayer round out the package.

The rest of the show kept the same energy. The next game drop adds ice caves, a new cave biome alongside the dripstone, lush, and sulfur caves, full of ice and calcite, with icicles growing on ceilings and light emitting ice crystals on the ground. A new zombie variant arrives with them, tougher than the regular kind, its hits applying a freezing effect, and some of the new zombies throw ice balls. Mojang is still to announce the update's release date, and the zombie is still awaiting an official name, which only adds to the anticipation.

The physical world got love too. Minecraft World opens in 2027 at the Chessington World of Adventures Resort in London, with the world's first Minecraft hotel, themed rooms, a deep sea diner, and the first ever Minecraft rollercoaster, Escape the Nether, running both indoors and outdoors. On October 27, a native Nintendo Switch 2 version arrives with Vibrant Visuals enabled by default, directional lighting, volumetric fog, and improved shadows and reflections, a look Switch players have only glimpsed through backward compatibility. All worlds, progress, and builds transfer over, and owners of the original Switch version get a digital upgrade path, with the price still to be announced. The Super Mario Mash Up pack gets an enhanced Vibrant Visuals update to celebrate.

Mojang's Chief Creative Officer Jens Bergenstrom also outlined a creator platform initiative aimed at lowering the barrier for players to become creators, better tools for building, managing, and sharing worlds and maps, with specifics still to come. Sound effects packs land in the Marketplace later this year, letting players reskin how almost everything sounds. A new Wilderness Bound community challenge offers Character Creator items and Java skins. The through line of the whole broadcast is a studio treating a 15 year old game like a platform still in its growth phase.

For players, the calendar is generous. Dungeons II on September 29 brings the first steps into The Sift, the Switch 2 version on October 27 brings the prettiest Minecraft Nintendo has ever run, and 2027 brings the dimension to the main game plus a theme park hotel with your name on the reservation list. Fifteen years in, Mojang is still adding new worlds to get lost in.
