The Greatest RPG of Its Generation Just Went Free, and Its Real Price Is a Graphics Card
On September 29, eleven years after it first launched, The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt became the biggest free upgrade in gaming history. CD Projekt Red released the Remastered edition across PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, and every existing owner gets the upgrade free, with saves carrying over. The remaster is a genuine rebuild. The skill system is redesigned with three ranks per skill and prerequisites, and existing characters get their points refunded. Combat gains new finishers, reworked animations and updated enemy behavior. A transmog system lets players change gear appearance while the stats stay exactly as they are. Meditation now plays out as a time lapse in the world, Photo Mode gains poses and weather controls, and a new Bard Ballad accessibility preset eases the mental load of play. Mod support arrives through Mod.io, reaching consoles too.
On PC the presentation moves to native DirectX 12 with full path tracing, DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, FSR 4 and XeSS 2.0, covering all three GPU vendors. PlayStation 5 Pro gets spectral super resolution with ray tracing at 60 frames per second, and the Switch 2 version adds mouse sensor mode, motion controls, VRR and HDR. The download runs about 45 gigabytes.
The pricing story is the headline. CD Projekt co chief executive Michał Nowakowski told PC Gamer the free upgrade was the obvious answer from the start, and reviewers have read it as a deliberate course correction after the Cyberpunk 2077 refund era. New buyers pay 59.99 dollars with both expansions included, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, positioning the remaster as the entry point before the Songs of the Past expansion in 2027 and The Witcher 4 targeting 2028. On consoles the bonus stays standalone, with its own achievements and cloud saves, a treatment the PC version still awaits.
